BA in Production Technology and Management
The Production department consists of the BA Production Technology and Management and the BA Production Arts and Design and both of these programmes work very closely with each other in the classroom and on Conservatoire productions. The Head of Production and Programme Leader for the two undergraduate production programmes is Ros Maddison. Ros has been leading the department since 2002 before which she taught stage management. Prior to this, she worked as a freelance stage manager across Scotland for many years. Ros has been External Examiner for a variety of other institutions including RADA and Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. She became a Fellow of the Royal Conservatoire in 2012. The Production Department is at the hub of performance activity in the Conservatoire and as such our students collaborate with actors, singers, dancers, musicians, filmmakers and performance artists on a daily basis. This opportunity to work with such a large and diverse range of work is one of the ways in which the Production Programmes at the Conservatoire stand out from other institutions. The BA Production Technology and Management is designed to produce Production Technicians, Managers and Designers who can turn their hand to any related role, making them both useful and employable in a range of contexts, whilst also being specialists in specific career pathways i.e. Stage Management, Stage Technology, Production Lighting and Sound, Lighting Design and Sound Design. Our graduates will aspire to become the creative leaders and innovators of the future and will be encouraged to push accepted boundaries and create new standards of practice in the industry at large, especially in the area of health and safety practice. As our standards are rooted in industry practice we have exceptionally strong links with professional partners from across the UK and beyond. As the only institution in Scotland offering degree level qualifications in technical theatre and production arts, we have very close relationships with the key Scottish national companies, such as Scottish Opera, the National Theatre of Scotland and Scottish Ballet as well as the majority of regional theatres such as the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, Pitlochry Festival Theatre and the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. Further afield in the UK we have well-established relationships with national organisations such as the Association of British Theatre Technician (ABTT), the Association of Stage Pyrotechnicians (ASP) the Production Lighting and Sound Association (PLASA), and companies such as Stage Technologies, Just FX and the National Theatre in London.
The BA Production Technology and Management is a practice-based programme which develops skill, knowledge and understanding incrementally. Students on this programme are interviewed and accepted based on their profile in one or several areas of study taken from the four core subjects on offer (stage management, lighting, sound and stage technology). All of these disciplines are studied in level one and into level two before specialist pathways are followed. At this point Lighting Design becomes part of the core provision and a specialist pathway in its own right alongside Production lighting.
BAPAD Level 1 in OutlineLevel One of the programme is based on experiential learning and skills acquisition focusing on the context of ‘production’. You will engage with a broad-based introduction to the production environment and standard practices both in core subject areas and more broadly in related production arts and design subjects. The production and design process is deconstructed and examined through a range of classroom, workshop and venue based experiences culminating in two allocated roles (one in stage management and one in production technology) on Conservatoire productions. In Professional Practice modules, you will investigate and analyze the importance of personal development and the broader creative context as well as being introduced to the importance of health and safety and the Conservatoires requirement for best practice in this area. You will also investigate the collaborative nature of production and performance have the opportunity to work with other level one students from across the Conservatoire on small collaborative projects.
BAPTM Level 2 in OutlineLevel Two aims to consolidate fundamental skills and knowledge and to introduce more advanced approaches and techniques including management and self-promotion. You will begin by working on Conservatoire productions as part of a collaborative ‘ production team’ with students from Level Three where roles will be allocated by team, allowing a flexibility of both workload and responsibility. From this position, you can begin to develop leadership skills whilst at the same time consolidating your practical capabilities. This begins your individual pathway, as negotiated with your Transitions Tutor, where your learning is designed to promote your own individual development and achievement. Trimester two brings a return to the ‘ classroom’ and a menu of both compulsory and elective studies through which you will equip yourself to continue your personal development journey and ultimately undertake more complex, senior roles. Professional practice at Level Two focuses on the development of the individual practitioner, looking at more advanced health and safety practices, practical management techniques such as budgeting and scheduling, personal development and promotional tools such as CVs and websites as well as a mock interview with an industry partner. Also at level two, you will engage with ‘Choice’ modules where you can choose from a range of modules on offer from programmes across the institution or undertake a negotiated project.
BAPTM Level 3 in OutlineLevel Three enables consolidation of all prior learning and exploration and development of specialist skills in autonomous situations. You will begin by returning to the concept of the ‘Production Company’ working collaboratively with Level Two students offering the opportunity to explore more complex operational roles rather than solely leading a team. This will enable your skills base to develop to the highest possible standards as well as providing an opportunity to reflect on leadership strategies by observing other students in management roles. Trimester two offers core electives to develop individual practice either in the Conservatoire or on a secondment in the workplace along with a final managerial role in which all knowledge, skill and understanding learned on the programme can be applied. Professional practice at Level Three builds on previous modules but focuses on the company rather than the individual introducing broader management techniques, health and safety management and the development of entrepreneurial and business skills. Each student negotiates their individual pathway in the third year in order to take effectively take advantage of the available production roles, choice modules and secondment opportunities over the two trimesters. You will also be offered the opportunity to visit at least one major trade show or association conference during your final year.
AssessmentMuch work is assessed through staff observations of your practice but reflection underpins the approach to assessment, and reflective blogs and summary statements form a key component of assessment in all modules. There is a strong emphasis on the assessment of process and so all paperwork generated in each practical role is also assessed as evidence of your widening understanding of the production process and your role within it.
Scottish Highers – 3 passes (grade C or above)

International Baccalaureate – minimum score of 24 with 3 subjects at Higher Level
We offer a flexible approach to students taking Highers over more than one academic year and/or who achieve their qualifications in more than one sitting. Entrance to the Conservatoire is based on talent, potential and ability, therefore consideration will be given to relevant experience which is deemed to compensate for any traditional education. We accept a wide range of qualification, including international qualifications.
The language of study is English. Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to provide evidence of proficiency in English. We accept the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
