BSc in Mathematics (Hons)Mathematics is one of the most fascinating and intellectually challenging subjects. It constantly develops the ways in which we live and think, as it plays a key role in most of today's scientific and technological advancements. This programme will give you a sound knowledge of mathematics and its application to real-life situations and will build up your ability to analyze and solve problems. It will provide you with an opportunity to acquire skills, such as logical analysis, deduction, mathematical modeling and calculation, which are valued by employers.

In response to our students' increased interest in pursuing a career in teaching, we also offer courses such as Mathematics in Society and Mathematics, Education, and Communication. The latter offers teaching experience through the Undergraduate Ambassadors Scheme. This encourages and nurtures a new generation of mathematicians and provides the opportunity to gain classroom experience as a final-year option.... [-]

BSc - Bachelor of Mathematics

The organisation of this subject area is as flexible as possible, taking into account the specific aspects of the teaching of mathematics, the internal logic of which determines to a large extent the order in which the notions must be presented. It makes for varied programmes of study and the possibility of refocusing your direction late into the course and offers a very solid foundation of theoretical fundamentals that will be vital in the future. Students who foresee graduating into active life will be able to find in this programme teaching that is adapted to their particular plans by choosing a set of teaching units that is less theoretical but covers a spectrum of knowledge that is wider or geared toward applications.... The primary purpose of the BSc Honours qualification is to consolidate and deepen the students’ knowledge and expertise in Mathematical Statistics, and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of it. BSc Honours is essentially a coursework degree of which at least 25% (30) of the credits are devoted to a research project and reporting under supervision.

The degree demands a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence, and serves as the initial science postgraduate specialization qualification providing students with in-depth scientific knowledge and skills preparing them for research based postgraduate science study.

Mathematical Statistics 3A10 and 3B10 are compulsory prerequisites. Students that do not comply with this requirement may be admitted at the discretion of the Chairman of the Department. Such students may be required to do additional work as prescribed by the Chairman of the Department. A student needs a semester mark of 40% to gain entrance to the final assessment opportunity. The semester and final assessment mark weight is 50:50. A student needs a final mark of 50% to pass a module. The semester mark also contributes to the result of a supplementary assessment. The final result of a supplementary assessment is capped on 50%.... [-]

The Honours programme consists of 9-semester modules and a shortly written project. The project is done under the supervision of a member of the Department and must be presented as a lecture. It has the weight of one subject module and is examined internally. Modules are selected in consultation with the Department and may be exchanged with modules from other departments; for example from Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Economics and Econometrics.... You have probably recently studied maths at school. You may have learnt formulas and how to apply them, how to draw graphs and how to calculate areas and volumes. How did you know that the formulas would work? Who was the first person to use that formula – and how did they know it would work?

Studying Mathematics at degree-level is about much more than just applying what you already know to a series of problems. It is a creative, investigative subject where you will push the boundaries of what is possible to achieve through thinking and then apply it to the world.

Course overview

Our Honours course in Mathematics is designed to be intellectually stimulating and vocationally relevant. This course will appeal to students who like to tackle real-world challenges through the intellectual rigour and purity of approach that is inherent in mathematics. The programme will develop your skills in pure and applied aspects of the subject to an advanced level, combining these with training in probability, advanced statistics and data analysis. In your final year of study, you will tackle a piece of independent research, bringing together this comprehensive portfolio of skills to focus upon a research question of your choice. With support from the University’s careers and placements team, the skills and experience derived from this course should be readily transferable to graduate level employment across a range of sectors....
