The origins of the «Kazakh language and literature» Chair began with the Kazakh linguistic-pedagogical faculty of Abai Kazakh Pedagogical Institute, which is the first Kazakh higher educational institution, opened in 1928.

The founders of the chair are outstanding scientists who worked in the field of Kazakh linguistics and Kazakh literature. The chair was headed by A. Baitursynuly (1928-1929) and K. Zhubanov (1932-1937).

In 1937, the chair of the «Kazakh language and Kazakh literature» was divided into separate chairs. The chair of the «Kazakh language» was headed by Sarsen Amanzholov (1937-1941, 1943-1958), Dauletiyar Alimzhanov (1961-1971), Gabidolla Kaliyev (1958-1961, 1972-1973), Zhamal Bolatov (1977 -1978), Fatima Musabekova (1979-1988)., Seilbek Isayev (1988-1989), Nurzhamal Oralbayeva (1989-1997), Fauziya Orazbayeva (1997-2014), Zhanat Dauletbekova ( 2014-2018) and they made a significant contribution to the development of the chair as a hearth of linguistics and science methodology. Since 2018, the chair is headed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Kalbike Yessenova.

Mukhamedzhan Karatayev was the first head of the Kazakh literature chair (1937). In subsequent periods, the chair was headed by Kazhym Zhumaliyev (1938-1951, 1957-1968), Serik Kirabayev (1969-1989), Nygmet Gabdullin (1990-1997), Baltabai Abdigaziuly (1997-2008), Temirkhan Tebegenov (2008-2015).

In 2015, the chairs of theory and methodology of the Kazakh language and Kazakh literature were reorganized. The head of the chair is a doctor of pedagogical sciences, associate professor Zhanat Dauletbekova.

The «Kazakh language and literature» chair is one of the fundamental and oldest staff of AbaiKazNPU for the preparation of philological and pedagogical specialists.

In the Chair with the 88 years of rich history, worked scientists of Kazakh linguistics like E. Ismayilov, M. Karatayev, B. Shalabayev, A. Yesmambetov, D. Abilov, K. Zharmaganbetov, T. Nurtazin, M. Khasenov, Sh. Karibayev, A. Tokpanov, T. Abdirahmanov, M. Sarsekeev, H. Adibaev, R. Rustembekova, M. Myrzahmetov, M. Magauin, S. Makpyruly, N. Kelimbetov, U. Tynybayeva, T. Sydyuov, G. Kaliyev, M. Zholdybayev, U.Turmanzhanov, D.Alіmzhanov, A.Abilakov, N.Oralbayeva, K.Kasabekova with great personalities like Akhmet Baitursynuly, K.Zhubanov, Saken Seyfullin, Sattar Erubayev, Mukhtar Auezov, Sabit Mukanov, Khamza Yessenzhanov, Telzhan Shonanov, Sarsen Amanzholov, Ismet Kenesbayev, Akhmed Iskakov and they made an invaluable contribution to the training of qualified specialists in the field of Education and Science of the Republic. As a result of their hard work, many state and public figures, famous poets, writers, journalists, and literary critics graduated from the philological faculty.

In the 2018-2019 academic year, the theory of the Kazakh language and methodology chair and Academician S.Kirabayev Kazakh literature chair and the chair of practical languages were combined into Academician S. Kirabayev chair of the Kazakh language and literature, as the head of the chair was appointed doctor of philological sciences, professor Kalbike Yessenova.

Today, the chair's staff continue to carry out scientific, educational, and methodical work of the older generation. Currently, the chair includes 14 doctors of sciences, 22 candidates of sciences, 2 Ph.D., 4 masters, and 5 senior lecturers.

In the Republic, the Chair is the leader in training specialists at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels in the specialties 5B011700 - «Kazakh language and literature», 5B012100 - «Kazakh language and literature» in schools with non-Kazakh language», 5B021400 - «Literary studies», 5B20500 - «Philology». The work of the chair is carried out in three directions: scientific-theoretical, scientific-methodical, educational.

The teachers of the Chair are the authors of educational standards, model curricula, textbooks, and study guides approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan for general education schools, secondary specialized educational institutions, and higher educational institutions.

Under the guidance of teachers of the chair defended diploma works(theses), master's and doctoral dissertations in the field of philology, pedagogy (methods of teaching the Kazakh language and literature).

On the base of the Chair functioning the Scientific-Educational Club «Taglym», the Scientific and Educational Circle «Til-tanym», S. Seifullin Literary and Creative Association, Kazhym Zhumaliyev Scientific Circle, which are helping to improve the training of students, undergraduates, and doctoral students as qualified specialists and serve professional and personal development.

The staff of the chair continues a fruitful work on the integrated and high-quality implementation of research, training, and educational work in the new history of independent Kazakhstan.
