Introduction

Bachelor of Arts in International Studies WHY INTERNATIONAL STUDIES? The goal of international studies is to provide an education that allows you to become an informed world citizen. SSU's Bachelor of Arts in International Studies blends historical, contemporary and Christian views on world civilizations with compelling cross-cultural experiences. During the program, you will participate in two travel semesters (one in Asia and one in Europe) in which you will experience hands-on what it means to live life together in a Christ-centered learning community. International studies provide opportunities for innovative thinking and serious reflection on pressing global questions of economic development, social justice, and environmental sustainability. In this increasingly globalized world, international studies provide much-needed insight into such issues as poverty, population growth, disease, human migration, climate change, war, gender inequality, community dynamics, pop culture, world religions, mass communications, strategic development, water issues, cultural heritage and human rights. MAJOR IN INTERNATIONAL STUDIES A degree in International Studies requires 12 credit hours of core courses: IS 1000, 2000, 2050, and 3000 or their equivalent. A grade of C or better in each core course is required. A minimum of 21 additional credit hours must be taken at the upper level (3000 or 4000). Electives in International Studies are interdisciplinary, reflecting the nature of this broad field of study. Students must successfully complete both studies abroad semesters (GPA of 2.0 or better). NOTE: Students who major in international studies with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible to write a thesis pursuing research topics in International Studies. The thesis (IS 4080 and 4082) may only count as three credit hours toward the requirements for the upper-level electives. MINOR IN INTERNATIONAL STUDIES A minor in International Studies requires the cores courses: IS 1000, 2000, 2050, and 3000 or their equivalent, plus an additional 15 credit hours in International Studies, of which 12 credit hours must be at the upper level. A grade of C or better in each core course is required for the minor.
