Introduction
Bachelor of Arts in Psychology WHAT'S INTERESTING ABOUT PSYCHOLOGY? The goal of the study of psychology is to provide an education that informs your interactions with others for the rest of your life. Students choose to study psychology because they want to learn how and why they and others think and behave the way they do. By studying psychology, you will gain insights into human nature that are immensely relevant to your everyday life. Not only will you be able to understand the actions of those around you, by studying psychology you can become a better thinker, a more compassionate listener, a more engaged participant in the world around you. We believe the knowledge you will gain in our psychology program will help you become the kind of person who enhances the well-being of others. MAJOR IN PSYCHOLOGY A Major in Psychology requires that a student completes the three core courses in Psychology (1000/2000/3000), as well as Psy 1050 and a course in Statistics (2750). A grade of C or better in each course of this discipline is required for the major. If the mark is lower the course can still count toward the total credit hours, but not the major. In addition, the student is required to take seven upper-level Psychology electives (21 credit hours), which must include a minimum of six credit hours in other social sciences. These credit hours must also include at least one seminar course (usually Research Methods 4750) and may include a thesis. However, only three credit hours from a thesis may be included toward the total of 21 credit hours of required upper-level electives.Throughout their degree program, Psychology students are required to take at least two of the three core courses for three of the four core Humanities subjects as well *NOTE: Students taking the Psychology major may be required to take two or three online courses available through SSU, UNB or UM (Maine) over the course of their program and/or courses made available through hybrid courses scheduled in May or August. MINOR IN PSYCHOLOGY A minor is available for all students who complete the core courses plus 18 credit hours in upper- level Psychology and Social Science courses. Statistics is not required. A grade of C or better in each course of this discipline is required for the minor. If the mark is lower the course can still count toward the total credit hours, but not the minor. Throughout their degree program, Psychology students are required to take at least two of the three core courses for three of the four core Humanities subjects as well.
