About

American agriculture provides a third of the world’s food supply and will be called upon to significantly increase production by mid-century for an ever-hungrier world. As a student in Wilmington College’s largest major, you will become prepared to help meet that daunting challenge through a blending of academic theory and hands-on practical experience.

Our students do things! We emphasize the understanding of concepts through their application outside the classroom as the most effective way of learning. Our hands-on learning opportunities can take you from labs in our new Center for the Sciences & Agriculture to our greenhouses and 267-acre, crop and animal production farm. You’ll also have opportunities to learn how to lobby Congress on agricultural and rural life issues in Washington, D.C. and organize a judging competition that regularly attracts 1,000-plus high school students. You may even get the opportunity to study sustainable farming methods in tropical Costa Rica.... [-]

Are you drawn to the chemistry of life? Biochemistry studies life on the molecular and atomic levels – deep inside of each living organism at its most basic components. It encompasses not only the structures of the chemical components of living matter but also the metabolism of living matter and molecular genetics. If you find that interesting, this might be the major for you.

Areas of Study

In the UMW biochemistry major, which you will pursue through the Department of Chemistry, you’ll take chemistry, biology, and physics as well as biochemistry lectures and labs. If you choose, there are electives in nutrition and metabolism, the biology of cancer, biochemistry of proteins, and more.... [-]

Students will acquire a broad-based knowledge of chemistry, biology, and biochemistry, and understand how these areas are interconnected. ... [+]

The Wabash College Chemistry Department believes in a challenging curriculum, which thoroughly investigates all areas of modern chemistry and in a significant hands-on laboratory experience in which students become progressively more independent as they proceed through the curriculum. We believe that such an education will prepare chemistry majors for a variety of career outcomes, including those in research, medicine, teaching, and industry.

In recent years, three-fourths of our majors have gone to graduate school in chemistry/ biochemistry or to medical school following graduation. Others have chosen to take jobs as chemists or high school teachers or to attend other professional schools (business, law, and physical therapy). We strive to provide chemistry minors and pre-medical students with the knowledge base they need to succeed in their chosen fields.... [-]

Ferrum College is the only private college in Virginia that offers a four-year degree in Agricultural Science and teacher licensure in vocational agriculture. A diversified four-year curriculum stresses the theory, art, and practice of agriculture while also emphasizing the intimate intersections with sustainability. Within this framework, students consider the environmental, economic, and social ramifications of agricultural practices in an increasingly resource-strained world.

Emphasis Areas

The five program emphasis areas of Animal Science, Agribusiness, Agronomy, Horticulture, and Equine Studies allow students to focus their study. Agricultural teaching is, by nature, a hands-on endeavor. This philosophy is embodied in labs, class exercises, practica, internships, and independent research. These diverse delivery methods allow students to apply theory in a practical, real-world setting. This broad preparatory approach is underscored by a comprehensive liberal arts base to prepare graduates for a wide range of career opportunities. Students interested in a career in primary or secondary school teaching may study Animal Science or Horticulture and minor in Teacher Education.... [-]

Bachelor of Biotechnology

The biotechnology program is designed to serve those students interested in pursuing a career in research or higher academic degrees. Majors will be well-equipped to compete for employment in major pharmaceutical or industrial laboratories, governmental laboratories, or not-for-profit research institutions and will be competitive for academic placement in graduate degree programs. In accord with the general mission of the University, courses are taught from a Christian worldview.

The biotechnology program provides students with scientific background and laboratory experience necessary for employment in biotech and pharmaceutical industries, for advanced studies in applications of biotechnology such as biochemistry or molecular biology, or to pursue advanced professional degrees (MD, MBA, law) with the emphasis in biotechnological issues. Career opportunities in the field of biotechnology include university teaching and research or biomedical research in hospital, academic, governmental, or industrial research laboratory settings. Students taking business courses, along with their biotechnology training, would also represent ideal candidates for jobs in management, sales, or marketing in biotechnological or pharmaceutical industries. The biotechnology program is an ideal preparatory tool for students planning to go to graduate school or other professional degree programs, or those students interested in pursuing a career as a research associate....
