The Department of Soil and Environmental Sciences at NCHU was established in 1919. It first began as the Agriculture Chemistry Department at the Taipei Junior College of Agronomy and Forestry and is one of the departments with the longest history at the university. In 1960, the Soil and Fertilizer Division of the Agricultural Chemistry Department was expanded to become the Department of Soil Sciences, which specializes in the teaching and research of soil and fertilizer. In 1970, the Graduate Institute of Soil Sciences was founded to cultivate master-level talents. In 1982, a PhD program was established to cultivate top soil scientists. In 1995, the department moved to the then newly-built Agricultural Environment Science Building and was renamed the Department of Soil and Environmental Science in response to the government's merger strategy. Environmental science was included in the department's curricula and research to meet with the needs of the country's growth and to keep up with international exchange. -
