We are a dynamic department that offers courses in literature from around the globe, ranging from the traditional to the contemporary, as well as a diverse selection of creative and professional writing courses. Our program provides you with an engaging, rigorous, and personal education that will stimulate your intellectual growth while empowering you to become:

The Bachelor of Arts in English prepares you to use language both persuasively and creatively and to read, think, and write critically in any setting. Graduates pursue a variety of professional objectives and career paths, including graduate school in literature and creative writing, law school, teaching at the secondary level, journalism, technical and business writing, copywriting, editing, and proofreading.

Graduating with an English degree opens up your professional options to a wide variety of careers. Careers in publishing, mass media, education, law, marketing, copywriting, editing, and technical writing—one of the fastest-growing fields in the country—are common for graduates with this degree. But one of the chief benefits of an English degree is not being tied to any single field. Your experiences in your English major will enhance your writing, reading, analysis, and research skills, which are highly valued by employers in almost all industries.
Secondary Education Certification in English: Students who seek to be certified to teach English at the secondary level (grades 9-12) must complete a major in English Studies, take ENGL 37200 and 40400, complete a minor in secondary education (9-12), and take EDU 33400.

Curriculum
A Bachelor of Arts in English at Lindenwood University requires a minimum of 36 credit hours of English courses, including an introduction to literary study and a senior capstone course. Students also read a wide range of American, British, and world literature. Whether you are interested in studying the medieval world through the works of Chaucer, using literature to trace the social and political development of the early United States, diving deeply into the genre of Gothic literature, or exploring the global diversity of the English-speaking world, our program has courses for you.
Like every Lindenwood student, you will also complete the General Education requirements of the Bachelor of Arts. You are also required to be proficient in at least one foreign language up to the Elementary II level, which can be fulfilled by coursework, a placement test, or a combination of the two.

Elective Coursework

Note that students pursuing 9-12 English teaching certification must satisfy this elective coursework by completing ENGL 37200 and ENGL 40400.
No duplication of coursework is permitted within the program.
At least two of the courses taken for the degree must be marked as GE-Human Diversity courses.
ENG courses may satisfy program requirements at the discretion of the advisor.
English majors must demonstrate proficiency in one foreign language equivalent to Lindenwood University’s Elementary II level. Students who transfer in at least six college credit hours in such a language or who have a sufficient AP exam score in such a language are considered to have demonstrated proficiency. Students who have studied a language offered by Lindenwood University but who do not have sufficient college course credit in the language may consult with the program about having their proficiency tested by the faculty in our non-English language programs to determine which courses if any, they must take to fulfill the requirement. Students who have studied a language not offered by Lindenwood University and who do not have sufficient college course credit in the language may consult with the program about taking an online proficiency test to determine whether they will need to undertake further language study at Lindenwood. (Note: Not all languages are available for testing.)
English majors should take ENGL 30100 as soon as possible after completing ENGL 17000.
