Introduction
Kansas State Polytechnic’s social work program is designed for individuals determined to become professionals to help others navigate relationships; solve personal, family and community challenges; and learn to shape social and environmental forces affecting daily life.
Social work is a profession for those with a spark of idealism, a belief in social justice, and a natural love of working with people. Social work offers the chance to work with and for people regardless of socioeconomic status, race, age or gender in hospitals, at home, or at work.
Kansas State Polytechnic's social work program offers an intimate class size and inter-professional collaborative training with a final semester field practicum. Students will emerge prepared to practice in the most diverse environments, from urban to small communities and rural areas. The program is nationally accredited by the Commission of accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education.
Academic Curriculum
The classes in the social work major provide the knowledge, values and ethics, and skills that are needed for working in the profession. An emphasis is placed on practicing and developing competence in the skills used to work with people.
Graduates are recognized as holding a generalist or beginning level degree and are eligible to apply for a social work license in Kansas and other states that license bachelor’s-level social workers. Graduate school builds on the foundation of the undergraduate degree, allowing the social worker to be in more specialized positions.

Career Options
Social work is a dynamic and challenging profession with a vast array of career options and opportunities for deep personal satisfaction. Professional social workers are experts who help people obtain the resources they need to live with dignity. At the same time, social workers are committed to making society more responsive to people's needs.
Social workers practice in a variety of settings. In fact, wherever there are people, there are social workers. They are in hospitals, working from the obstetrics unit to the intensive care unit. They are in schools, helping children, teachers and parents cope with problems. They are in mental health clinics, psychiatric hospitals, and public agencies, from the employment office to the public welfare department.
Each private family service agency has social workers helping with everything from counseling to finding housing or transportation. Social workers are deeply involved in child welfare, providing essential foster care and adoption services. They are increasingly visible in the workplace, helping employees solve personal problems and employers resolve personnel problems.
There are social workers in universities, teaching and doing research. They are in nursing homes, the armed services and in private practice. Social workers in all these settings are seeing problems, understanding needs, developing relationships, helping people build their own lives and assisting communities in creating and delivering the services and support need.
