The program in BSc in Geography provides a general bachelor level education in geography. It includes introductory modules to Nature and social sciences, to Geology and to Geography. The core of the program is based on the fundamental issues of including topics in Physical, Human and Regional geography.

Globalisation, geopolitics, population change, and sustainability are amongst the largest challenges confronting society in the twenty-first century. Selecting Geography as a subject within the BA Arts degree in UL enables you to understand these issues and the ways in which they shape the world. The main aim of the Physical Geography and Oceanography Bachelor’s degree programme in Physical Geography is to prepare highly qualified geophysical sciences specialists with a focus on phenomena and processes occurring in the oceans, seas, rivers, lakes and other water bodies and in the atmosphere. Also to provide students with an opportunity to acquire integrated competence in the field of geography. The graduates are excellent specialists who are able to work the intellectual and creative work, to create conditions to gain scientific research-based decisions and apply new technologies to achieve the best problem solutions. Students are provided with an advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills; they gain the opportunity of becoming strategists of new technologies. Graduates will also acquire specific knowledge about the modern monitoring of the oceans and seas, marine economic development, international and national environment protection and sustainable development issues, essential components of the global maritime economy, and their geographical characteristics.

This discipline, offered by the School of Geography, Earth Science & Environment, introduces students to the study of the Earth’s biophysical environment, the wide field of human geography, as well as other courses that teach Geography with emphasis on the Pacific Islands such as the nature and distribution of the world’s plant and animal resources in the Pacific.

In line with the interdisciplinary higher education system development, the specialization Geography of Tourism aims to train specialists for tourism but also for institutions engaged in teaching and research activities. The originality of this specialization meets certain practical needs, knowing the importance which tourism enjoys currently. In this context, following the structure of the curriculum, graduates have the appropriate training in order to work in tourism.

The primary purpose of the BSc Honours qualification is to consolidate and deepen the students’ knowledge and expertise in Geography and to develop research capacity in the methodology and techniques of it. BSc Honours is essentially a coursework degree of which at least 25% (30) of the credits are devoted to a research project and reporting under supervision.

The Geography Department empowers students to address several contemporary problems such as physical resource development, racial/ethnic patterns, urban decay, business geography, and pollution. The curriculum helps students better understand how natural and human environments become organized geographically by institutional decisions and the consequences of human actions.
