Examine the processes and patterns that shape the natural world around us with our BSc Geography (Physical) with Professional Experience placement year degree. This three-year course will deepen your understanding of how our physical environment works, responds, and adapts to change. It also offers you the chance to help address issues critical to our shared global future. A key component of this degree is a year-long professional placement, which occurs between your second and final year. Placements can help enhance your employability and build your network.

The course combines study of the fundamentals of both subjects with the opportunity to focus on individual areas of interest through specialist option modules. Students will also develop their employability and personal self-awareness. An integral part of the programme is the opportunity to undertake a work placement, and in the final year of study, students have the opportunity to complete an interdisciplinary dissertation. Geographical fieldwork is undertaken locally in the first year, and on a residential trip (typically overseas) in the second year of the programme.

Geography at Robinson is thriving. We thus set high standards and gain commendable performances in a successful College Geography group of around 20 students. The group is traditionally hard working, very sociable and mutually supportive.

Geography, with its interest in the earth, environments, people and place, and with its variety of methodological approaches, is distinctive from most natural or social science courses. Geographers are problem-solvers, who are able to balance and interrogate qualitative and quantitative data, and who view the world in all its connectivity. Studying geography at Cambridge will take you from the fenlands of East Anglia, through active volcanic landscapes, into global climate futures – and more. All of these explored through the lenses of social, cultural and historical geographies, as much as through the geology, biology and physics underpinning the processes.

Emmanuel is one of the largest colleges in terms of numbers of Geography undergraduates, and is very supportive of the subject. Directors of studies duties are shared between Philip Howell and Alex Jeffrey, both of whom teach in the Department across all three years. Their specialisms lie mainly in human geography, but supervisions are always shared in the Department of Geography, and physical geographers are provided for in exactly the same degree.

In addition to the lectures within the Department and supervisions in the College, in St Edmund’s we have Introductory Study Skills Seminars at the start of the year for new students, and College mock exams at the start of Lent term. Although small in number, St Edmund’s Geographers work in close association with students from Girton College (one of the larger Geography colleges), where there is an active Geographical Society.
