The Geography program is one of two programs housed in the Department of Earth Science and Geography. Geography studies the spatial distribution of features across Earth’s landscape, such as the location of landforms, water bodies, and the organization of climate zones. It also considers the human landscape including how populations are distributed, why they migrate, and the ways they alter natural and urban environments. As a tool to advance these spatial analyses, the Geography program teaches the use of both traditional and computer-based geotechnical skills (geotechniques) such as cartography, remote sensing, and geographic information systems (GIS).

A strong, broad curriculum in geography prepares students well to continue on to graduate school. Since 2006, 100% of graduates applying to geography graduate programs have been awarded assistantships or fellowships.

Due to this broad range, the Geography program has been designed to allow students the flexibility to be able to select coursework that best suits their individual interests.

The Geography Program offers an undergraduate major leading to a Bachelor of Arts in geography. Students may choose either the normal geography degree program or the concentration in cartography and remote-sensing GIS. The program also offers two minors: geography and historic preservation. Undergraduates who wish to major in geography should identify themselves to the department as soon as possible in order that they may develop a meaningful sequence of courses and take part in departmental activities.

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography emphasizes a growing field that offers a wide range of career options. Geographers study both natural science and social science. Social science topics include spatial patterns of culture, policy, conflict, demographics, economics, resources and waste, with an emphasis on investigating the intersection of human activity and environmental processes. Geographers use a variety of geospatial technologies to map the world in different ways from the global to the local.

The subject matter of geography is diverse. Geographers examine and analyze patterns of rural and urban settlement, resource exploitation, land use, and social and cultural phenomena. They are concerned with the natural features and processes of the earth's surface, the ways in which nature has conditioned the human occupancy of the earth, and the ways in which people have modified natural landscapes.

Global Studies and Human Geography prepares you to succeed in an increasingly globalized world. Our students study global change and the movement of people and resources in the world, focusing in particular on the spatial aspects of issues, communities, and cultures. They develop skills in critical thinking and complex analysis, written and verbal communications, and how to work effectively across cultures – the skills needed to work and thrive in the modern world.

The Bachelor of Arts major in geology requires 36 credits in geology and ancillary sciences. It is a good choice for broadly exploring the liberal arts and want a general liberal arts degree.
