The Department of Sociology, founded in 2011, offers a unique program in the United Arab Emirates, combining sociology and social work. The program is aligned with the needs of society, as sociology and social service represent a vital sector that provides many job opportunities for students.

Guided by experienced faculty and community mentors, students earning a Social Justice Studies degree explore the reality and consequences of systemic oppression. They also learn how to respond to those realities and consequences in ways that alleviate immediate suffering and lead to social transformation.

Our Bachelor’s International Social Work (ISW) program offers students the expertise to become social workers without borders. Placing emphasis on our global interconnectedness, students get a chance to explore local social problems from global perspectives, while also appreciating their local context. Our students learn to connect and empower individuals, groups and communities. We address current social issues, such as migration and refugees, sustainability, child protection, human rights and social development.

Did you know that around 20% of the Spanish population is in a situation of poverty or social exclusion? Given this fact, the work of the social worker is now more important than ever. With this degree, you will learn to design actions and strategies that promote social equity and improve the situation of vulnerable groups (children, homeless people, dependent people, etc.).

The social work program equips graduates with the knowledge, values, and skills needed for the development of professional ethics and practice competence. The program prepares graduates to work effectively in a broad spectrum of social service settings that address poverty, multiple forms of oppression, social injustice, and other human rights violations. The department seeks to be a brave space for students with multiple and diverse identities, striving for inclusive excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. The program also prepares students for graduate study in social work and other related professions including law, counseling, and public policy. In addition to lecture and class discussion, the social work program utilizes a variety of teaching strategies, including case-based and experiential approaches to enhance learning. Students are exposed to issues and organizations at local, state, and national levels through policy forums, conferences, interviews, and service learning. All majors use the interviewing labs for case simulations and interviewing to develop their practice skills. The department offers minors in family studies (with a focus in gerontology or family ecology) and Nonprofit Studies.

Social workers are professional experts who provide help for a person, family, or community; supporting them to improve their quality of life. This course provides a program of studies giving you the skills and competencies necessary for a career in a variety of social care roles working with children, adults, and families. This full-time, 3-year BSc Social Work Practice offers students a flexible route to qualification as a social worker and will be delivered via a blended learning method of face-to-face and online teaching. The first year of study is largely preparatory and no practice placements are undertaken.

Set yourself apart with contacts in your field and significant experience on your résumé through a 400-hour (or more) internship with a local social service agency, as well as community service work and an applied research project with opportunity for publication.
