Introduction
Bachelor Composition for Film and Theatre
Composition for Film and Theatre is a hybrid course for gutsy, wilful composers. Do you want to become the best composer you can be, from wherever you are in the world? Then this is the course for you! You can take this course either online or on campus in Arnhem; you can even switch between the two every year!
You already know a thing or two about composition. Perhaps you taught yourself, or perhaps you followed a preparatory course. You think and work with music in mind, you like experimenting and you enjoy stretching the limits of music and of your own abilities. Does this sound familiar? Then this programme has a lot to offer you! The study programme focuses on being a maker; we teach you the craft skills you need to become a really good composer.

Curriculum
The first year
The first year is the same for all Composition for Film and Theatre students. In the first year, you will get to know various musical and composition techniques. For this, you will take a number of courses. Some of them are:
- Production Lab
- Rhythm Lab
- Autonomous Composition (personal compositional study)
- Film and theatre composition
- Harmony on the piano
- Music Theory
- Ensembles and instruments
The second year
In the second year, you will also take several composition and music classes as well as classes in the field of entrepreneurship and dramaturgy. After the first year, you probably already have been getting a better idea of who you are and which directions you want to take as a composer. To be able to map out this path, in the second year you will choose a number of electives. You can fulfil this elective segment with classes from other ArtEZ programmes, such as Jazz & Pop, Music Theatre, or even Theatre & Dance or Art & Design.
The third year
In the third year, you will still take a number of compulsory subjects, such as Production Lab, Music Theory and General Conducting. You will also work together with students in other disciplines in project weeks such as Pleasure Island. You will also begin your artistic research in the third year. For this, you will write a thesis based on a subject of your own choosing, or an essay or journalistic article with a subject related to your future profession.
Fourth year
Your internship is an important part of this final year. During this internship, you will learn to reflect on your own production process and to professionalise your communication skills as a film and theatre composer. You will also discover the ins and outs of the market in which you will soon be working.

Program delivery
To ensure that the study programme exactly matches your ambitions, about a quarter of the curriculum consists of electives. By collaborating with students from other disciplines, you can broaden your horizon even further. The programme has existed as a main subject in the Jazz & Pop department at the Arnhem Academy of Music for ten years. As a student you can benefit from a programme with years of accumulated knowledge and experience and a large alumni network.
During the study you will not only go into depth, but into breadth as well. There is a strong
emphasis on the compositional and technical aspects of your subject. At the same time, you will discover which aspect(s) of the profession work best for you personally during projects and collaborations.
