Introduction

Energy is a key component in modern civilization. Since the drilling of the first commercial oil well in 1858, petroleum engineers and geoscientists engineers have supplied the world with the number one source of energy – crude oil and natural gas. Economic and environmentally safe production of petroleum resources requires the creative application of a wide spectrum of knowledge, including:

  • Basic sciences: mathematics, physics, chemistry and geology.
  • Major engineering subjects: mechanical, chemical, and civil engineering, as well as computer science.
  • R&D fields: nano-technology, advanced materials science, numerical simulation, molecular dynamics, etc.

As a petroleum engineer, you will enjoy a lucratively high-salary* as you evaluate potential oil and gas reservoirs, design and manage drilling activities, enhance hydrocarbon production methods, and design surface pipeline systems and treatment facilities. Petroleum engineers increasingly use advanced computers, not only in the analysis of exploration data and simulation of subterranean reservoir dynamics, but also in automation of oilfield production and drilling operations. Petroleum companies own many of the world’s supercomputers.

Mission

The Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering program at the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (A.U.R.A.K.) educates students to become qualified engineers who are capable of generating effective solutions by using engineering approaches in the field of Petroleum Engineering. The graduates of the program will be well versed in technology and in social and environmental issues.

To fulfill this mission, the program provides the undergraduate student with a thorough foundation in the basic tenets of Petroleum Engineering and technologies, and a broad introduction into geophysics, petroleum geology, fluid properties, formation evaluation, drilling, reservoir engineering and simulation, artificial lift systems, completions and oil and gas facilities engineering.. The program provides a strong background for graduate study in the diverse areas branching out of the Petroleum Engineering field. The technical focus is complemented with topics in general education leading to a well-rounded member of the global society.

Program Educational Objectives

The Program Goals describe the expected accomplishments of graduates during their first few years after graduation. The program goals have been derived from and support the mission statement of the American University of Ras al Khaimah.

The Petroleum Engineering Program at AURAK aims to:

  • Prepare graduates with a broad knowledge of petroleum engineering and their applications.
  • Prepare graduates with the knowledge and critical thinking skills required to design and analyze petroleum engineering problems, taking into account, safety, environmental and societal impacts.
  • Prepare graduates who are exposed to professional ethics and who have a commitment to public welfare and the environment.
  • Prepare graduates who have been exposed to current and emerging technologies, and have the ability to pursue life-long learning through continuing education or post-graduate education.
  • Prepare graduates with an appreciation for the value of continuing professional development in maintaining their professional competence, through participation and leadership in professional organizations.

Student Outcomes

AURAK has adopted ABET’s a-k outcomes for Petroleum Engineering Program. The outcomes for the program are:

  • Competency in mathematics through differential equations, linear algebra, probability, and statistics; and engineering subjects including the strength of materials, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics, and the ability to apply these to practical petroleum engineering problems.
  • An ability to design and conduct different petroleum laboratory experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
  • Competency in petroleum engineering including design and analysis of well systems, procedures for drilling and completing wells, characterization and evaluation of subsurface geological formations, design and analysis of systems for producing, injecting, lifting and handling fluids; application of reservoir engineering principles and practices for optimizing resource development and management; use of project economics and resource valuation methods for design and decision making under conditions of risk and uncertainty.
  • An ability to work and interact effectively in groups/teams which have diverse personalities, cultures, and backgrounds.
  • Ability to identify, formulates, and solves practical petroleum engineering problems.
  • An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
  • Ability to develop effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate the potential risks, i.e. consequences and probabilities of engineering solutions which may affect society and the environment.
  • Recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in independent-learning and life-long learning.
  • A knowledge of contemporary issues related to the petroleum industry.
  • An ability to use of computer software such as spreadsheets, mathematics packages, word processors, reservoir simulation models, and design packages in solution of petroleum engineering problems
