The mission of the School of Business at Chowan University is to develop the ethical business leaders of tomorrow. Building upon the strength of our Christian heritage, we empower our students by guiding them in the mastery of business theories, organizational skills, technical proficiencies, and critical analyses that prepare them for careers in the rapidly changing business world. Our supportive faculty emphasizes teaching excellence, using a strong program of academic advisement to help students throughout their college careers. Founded in 1929, the School of Business at Chowan University is among the largest programs on campus because of this steadfast dedication. The business faculty assists students in reaching their full potential as future business leaders.
The School of Business Visiting Executive Program exists to expand the educational horizons of our students by providing the opportunity for interaction with upper-level business executives from a variety of business fields. Each semester a different executive comes to campus to speak in classes, have a networking meal with a small group of students and the School of Business faculty, and speak at an assembly later in the day. Since its inception, participants have included a former vice president of the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank, partners in a large accounting firm, president and upper management of a hospital, vice president of an international agricultural corporation, vice president of a large commercial construction firm with contracts throughout the southern and eastern US, a senior economic developer for the NC Department of Commerce, the Public Relations and Communications Manager for one of the largest manufacturers of biomass fuel in the US, and a Regional General Manager with Lowe’s.
Each business student is enrolled in a program of study leading to the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Degree. All students study the common professional component that comprises our Business Core Courses.
Beyond the Business Core, students choose a specialization in at least one of four areas. These areas of concentration are:
Information Systems. Chowan University’s School of Business can prepare you for a successful career in an important field with growing demand. Information Systems (IS) professionals manage the networks of hardware and software used to collect, filter, process, create and distribute data. In a world driven by the communication of information, IS professionals are crucial. Students in the IS Concentration in the School of Business focus on the application of information technology to solve business problems using a variety of tools and techniques. Our comprehensive courses, developed to meet best practices in the industry, are supplemented with core business courses that give students a broad understanding of business functions and processes. Small class sizes and hands-on application of technology enable students to gain proficiency with their IS skills. To keep up with the leading edge of technology, Chowan University has partnered with Microsoft to give our students free access to many software tools through Microsoft DreamSpark. Students have access to industry-standard software such as server software, operating systems, Microsoft developer tools, and much more!
Employment opportunities in the Information Systems field abound!
Management. Chowan University’s School of Business can prepare you for a successful career in the important field of management. Peter Drucker, one of the foundational theorists in management, stated that managers set objectives, organize people, motivate and communicate, analyze performance and develop people. Managers are needed everywhere – in small businesses, huge corporations, governments, and non-profit organizations.
A business management degree is valuable for individuals beyond those seeking to be a manager. Organizations are increasing the level of responsibility for all employees, making it critical for people entering the job market to have strong management skills. The small class sizes at the School of Business at Chowan University enable the professors to give each student individualized attention. Students develop their skills through practical classroom exercises, interesting group projects, and intellectually stimulating classroom lectures.
Management courses focus on developing the knowledge, abilities, and people skills necessary to manage in today’s knowledge economy. Specialized courses focus on different aspects of management including communications, decision-making processes, teamwork, ethics, motivation, human resources, electronic commerce, organizational theory and behavior, entrepreneurship, and leadership. A degree in Business Administration with a Concentration in Management supplies the foundation for your success as a manager and a leader in the dynamic world of business.
Marketing. According to the American Marketing Association, “Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.” Every firm from small to large, for-profit or non-profit and including private, public or government, needs skilled individuals to handle its marketing function. Positions include sales, advertising, public relations, retailing, market research, corporate marketing, internet marketing, and customer relations. Graduates with a marketing degree will enter a growing job market according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, with individuals in the upper levels of marketing management commanding high salaries.
The Marketing Concentration in the School of Business at Chowan University will prepare you to enter this exciting and rewarding field!
