Introduction

Bachelor’s programme in Green Energetics is an engineering programme with an environmental focus, oriented towards priority areas of energetics – energy efficiency and alternative energy sources with reduced emissions for so-called sustainable development. The training focuses on research, design and operation of energy efficient and environmentally friendly systems and equipment.

Alternative energy sources such as sun, wind, water, geothermal, ocean streams, biomass, hydrogen technology, photovoltaic, tidal, difference in temperatures between the different layers of the ocean are studied, as well as new advanced technologies for generating it.

A separate module of knowledge and applicable skills is linked to efficient consumption in lighting, transport and drives in households and industry, heating and air conditioning of buildings, the construction of "green" facilities and others. The training is entirely in the English language.

The aim of the speciality is to educate highly qualified engineers with opportunities for professional development into a comprehensive, dynamic and promising field of energy in general and in particular to modern energy technology, renewable energy and energy efficiency. In their particular professional performance as designers, planners, consultants, experts, private entrepreneurs, scientists, teachers, representatives of state and municipal authorities and NGOs, students of this specialty meet the challenges of a dynamically changing natural and economic environment and pursue ambitious task to make energy cheap, safe and environmentally friendly, and energetics - efficient and sustainable.

During the course of training students study general subjects forming the basis of engineering preparation: Mathematics, Physics, Green Chemistry, Basics of Economics, European Values and Culture, Informatics, Electrical Engineering, Introduction to Construction and CAD Systems, Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, Material Science, European Policies and Standards, Fluid Mechanics, Electrical Machines and Operations, Electroenergetics, Electrical Apparatuses and Installations, Measurement Technics and Fundamentals in Energy Management.

The specialized preparation in the program students acquire knowledge of a block of disciplines such as:

  • Geothermal Energetics;
  • Solar Heating and Cooling Systems;
  • Green Buildings;
  • Green Energy and Safety Environment;
  • Wind Energetics;
  • Biomass Energetics;
  • Introduction to Hydrogen Technology;
  • Optimization and Energy Efficiency;
  • Photovoltaic Systems;
  • Sustainable Development and Energy Ecology;
  • Meteorology and Climatology;
  • Ocean Energy Conversion.

Several modules have been developed as electives courses providing additional specialized knowledge in the field of Green Energy. Combination of the basic bachelor’s disciplines and the offered modules make possible the students have a choice to build up their specialized preparation in the field of:

  • Solar Energy
  • Biomass and Biofuels
  • Hydrogen Technology and Fuel Cell
  • Green Buildings and Energy Efficiency – together with the Bachelor’s programme in Civil Engineering.
  • Economic aspects of Renewable Energy Sources.

This additional specialization enables graduates to gain serious preparation in the mentioned areas. This will allow them if they wish to continue their specialized training in various Master’s programmes in EPU or other universities.

Students are offered practice in leading companies and one semester studying abroad, as well as involvement in research projects. Foreign professors from Italy, Spain and other countries participate in the learning process.

Graduates of Bachelor’s programme in Green Energetics can make a career in various areas of Energetics, in particular in the field of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency: designers and constructors of power systems, consultants in Energy Efficiency and experts and consulting companies, scientists and teachers in schools, representatives in state and municipal authorities and NGOs, private entrepreneurs.

Engineers in Green Energetics successfully completed the Bachelor’s degree

Will have: Basic knowledge in the field of engineering, technology and electrical engineering. Thorough knowledge of energy conversion and its application in the introduction of renewable energy sources in conformity with the basic natural and engineering aspects. Very good engineering preparation for planning and operation of facilities for the use of renewable energy sources and improving efficiency in the use of energy in industry and households. Solid scientific preparation.

Will know: Modern management and economic theories. The specifics of energy management. European policies and standards. National and European patent legislation and intellectual property protection. The methods of formulation and implementation of strategies, energy business plans, programs and projects. Best available technology.

Will be able: to apply engineering solutions on problematic aspects of the field of renewable energy sources and use appropriate methods for modelling, simulation and optimization in various renewable energy sources. To analyze and evaluate in terms of energy, economic and constructive perspective projects for facilities and operation of renewable and conventional energy sources, and to plan and carry out research in this area. To work in a team in solving problems of interdisciplinary and international character in terms of economic and political framing. To apply acquired theoretical knowledge and practical experience to solve problems of practice. To formulate goals and strategies to produce plans, programs and projects. To participate in the development of corporative, regional and national energy strategies. To realize fruitful contacts with their partners in Bulgaria and abroad. To plan and organize effectively their own careers. To use a variety of scientific and practical information sources and to work independently with them.

The University applies the European System of Credit Transfer (ECTS), which guarantees the recognition of students courses acquired at other universities. ECTS provides transparency of actions and assists in building up good relations between institutions, thereby increasing the opportunities for students in their choice of research direction. The system facilitates institutions in recognition of the student’s achievements due to conventional credits and assessments.
