What is Political Science about?
The Bachelor's study programme of Political Science at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Hradec Králové (F.F. U.H.K.) focuses on all the main areas of political science. Specifically, these are (1) political systems (which include the issue of elections and electoral systems, political parties or analysis of the functioning of political systems in the countries of Western, Central and Eastern Europe), (2) political thinking, (3) international relations, or (4) problems of European integration. For better understanding these political science disciplines in the context and their connection with practice, the concept of our study programme at F.F. U.H.K. embraces courses in modern Czech (resp. Czechoslovak) and European history or courses focusing on contemporary world affairs. The students themselves can shape the programme in each semester by choosing the elective courses that complete the programme and facilitate the students their gradual specialization.
A strong emphasis is put on developing analytical and argumentative skills, especially through interactive seminars that complement the lectures. A relatively small number of students then allow the tutors a more personalized approach to individual students and their gradual profiling, and not only within the above-mentioned seminars and lectures, but also when writing the bachelor thesis.
Graduates
The graduates of this programme of Political Science at the Philosophical Faculty UHK have theoretical and factual knowledge of political science and modern history, which they are able to apply in practice and thanks to them they can profit from understanding not only the context of Czech, but also of European and world politics. An integral part of our graduates’ "equipment" is also the ability to work well with texts (both actively and passively) and the competence of public presentation, which the students acquire mainly through seminar activities or supported internships, and practices gained at potential employers.
