Overview

The Double Degree programme is a Hong Kong Baptist University innovation. After five years of full-time study, students graduate with a Bachelor's degree (BA) with honours in English Language and Literature, and a Bachelor's degree with honours in Education (BEd).

The double degree provides in-depth knowledge and understanding of the subject area and, at the same time, prepares students to be professionally qualified English language teachers. This arrangement ensures a close association between the development of subject knowledge and the practice of teaching. Places are available for Primary Teaching and Secondary Teaching.

The Double Degree also gives access to a wide range of career opportunities, both within and outside teaching. It offers an excellent grounding for many career routes which draw on the in-depth study of the subject and the organisational, interpersonal and professional skills which are the characteristics of a qualified teacher.... Aims and Objectives

To be physically active is an integral and important part of healthy living. With the increasing awareness and need for quality and active lifestyles, the numbers of public and private sport facilities, fitness clubs, and residential clubhouses have increased substantially over the years. There is a high demand for professional management of sports and recreation programmes and facilities as well as delivery of quality physical education in school and community environments. With the continual demand for trained graduates in the field of physical education, sport, and recreation management, the "Physical Education and Recreation Management" (PERM) programme was established in 1992. The overall aim of the PERM is to provide students with sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge, skills, and practical experience (internship) in the discipline of physical education and recreation management. Furthermore, under the ethos of "whole person education" of the University, our students will also receive a strong liberal arts education such that they can embark on a variety of careers. Overview

The BSocSc (Hons) in Government and International Studies programme is intended to provide a programme of study which will give students a firm grasp of the different areas of political science. These cover political sociology (including political institutions, political culture and political behaviour), government and public policy-making, international relations and political economy, political theory and political thought, and political methodology.

In geographical terms, the programme focuses on the politics of Hong Kong, mainland China, and the Asia Pacific region, on the basis that it is essential to give Hong Kong students a thorough understanding of their own political environment. The programme seeks to stimulate the students' interest and to sharpen their awareness by incorporating a systematic comparative and international dimension, drawing both on the China Studies and European Studies programmes.... Economics Concentration

Since 1979 China has been following a new development strategy emphasizing the role of improving productivity and strengthening external economic relations. To implement this strategy, China is in the process of reforming her system of economic administration. This involves generally giving greater autonomy to local authorities and basic economic units, and greater use of a market mechanism to regulate and coordinate economic activities and to enlarge consumer choice. These changes are in recognition of past problems and defects in China's socialist economic development. Theoretical work has been carried out to justify and guide the reforms, and policies have been adjusted frequently in response to problems which have emerged during the reform process. For both traders and researchers concerned with China, a sound understanding of China's administrative system and development strategies has become increasingly important. Hong Kong's business and other institutions with interests in China have become particularly keen to recruit economists with expertise in the Chinese economy, both to help formulate trade and investment decisions and to advise on the Chinese Macroeconomic context.... Overview

European civilization is among the oldest and most influential in the world. European political and social ideas, religion, philosophy, art, literature, and European science and technology have been of decisive importance in shaping our contemporary world. To understand Europe is hence to understand one of the main sources of modernity. The European Union has emerged as a major actor in world politics, while decades of ideological division between Eastern and Western Europe has come to an end and the continent is coalescing. The growth and development of the European Union will be of vital importance to world politics and economics.

Within the BSocSc (Hons) in European Studies, Political Science provides the disciplinary core, underpinned by history and (cultural) area studies, business/economics or communication courses. Students also undergo rigorous training in either German or French up to levels of academic and professional fluency. The aim is to give students a firm knowledge of the basic features of the European world and the communicative skills necessary for a future professional or academic career in the field of European-Asian relations. Knowledge of Europe is deepened by the Honours Project in the final year, based on first-hand research into a particular subject related to Europe. Successful graduates also possess the skills requisite for immediate entry to postgraduate programmes both locally and in Europe.... [-]
