The Barney School is located in West Hartford, CT, adjacent to the insurance and financial services centers in Hartford, CT. It is one of the seven colleges within the University of Hartford, and it is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Barney offers undergraduate degrees in Accounting, Economics & Finance, Insurance & Finance, Management, Marketing, and Entrepreneurial Studies. An Actuarial Science minor is also offered. And the University has a Pre-Law advising program. At the graduate level, Barney offers an MBA, a Masters in Accounting & Taxation, dual degree programs such as MBA & MSAT and MBA & Master in Engineering, and post-graduate Certificates. Most of our MBA and MSAT courses can be taken totally online, totally in the classroom, or in any combination of both formats. Classroom courses are scheduled in the evenings so working adults can pursue their degrees as part-time students.

  • Creating a student-focused learning environment that emphasizes effective, high-quality baccalaureate and masters' level teaching and learning
  • Engaging in a broad range of scholarly activities to improve the practice of business, enhance and strengthen our teaching and provide intellectual stimulation to our faculty
  • Maintaining strong relationships with business, not-for-profit and government entities to facilitate their interaction with our students and faculty in a wide variety of activities

Accounting is a professional major designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in public accounting, management accounting and financial management. The major provides students the opportunity to acquire the basic knowledge of accounting theory and practice including the areas of reporting standards, auditing, federal income taxation, cost accounting, budgeting, technology and management consulting.

Courses in the major introduce students to the theory of accounting and its interrelationship with other fields of business including financial analysis, operations management and information technology. The program provides a solid background both for initial employment in the accounting profession, and for professional examinations including the Certified Public Accountant and Certified Management Accountant.... The majority of new job openings in the United States today are in small businesses, and most successful business leaders display a great deal of entrepreneurial behavior. Entrepreneurial Studies is an interdisciplinary major that focuses on the tools needed to start a new business, manage a small business, expand a family business, lead innovation efforts in a corporate environment or become an effective manager in a fast-growing enterprise.Services are offered to both men and women, including projects that offer professional consulting and student support to assist local businesses.

As part of the business core, students take upper-division business requirements, including Introduction to Marketing, Managing Organizational Behavior, Business Finance, Management Information Systems, and Operations Management. The major then begins with Principles of Entrepreneurship and continues with upper-level courses in all of the business disciplines, including Marketing Communications, Small Business Finance, Accounting/Tax for Small Business, and Business Law.
